Yoga and PCOS: support, evidence and limits
Yoga can be one way to make gentle movement and relaxation part of life with PCOS. It does not cure PCOS, and individual postures should not be presented as a way to restore ovulation or treat insulin resistance.
Where does yoga fit in PCOS care?
The 2023 international PCOS guideline supports healthy lifestyle habits, including physical activity, alongside individual medical care. It does not identify one particular exercise regimen as better than all others. A routine you enjoy and can maintain is a useful starting point; yoga is one possible activity, rather than a replacement for your treatment plan.
Discuss changes in symptoms, medication, fertility concerns and exercise restrictions with your healthcare professional. Your yoga teacher can help with a comfortable practice, but a yoga class cannot diagnose PCOS or determine its treatment.
What should you ask before joining a class?
- Can the teacher adapt movements to your experience and comfort?
- Can you pause, use support or skip a movement without pressure?
- Does the class leave room for questions and clear instructions?
- How will you communicate any clinician advice that affects exercise?
Are certain poses proven to balance hormones?
This article does not establish that a particular pose stimulates the ovaries, balances hormones or improves fertility. A comfortable stretch may be part of a movement routine, but it should not be sold as a targeted medical treatment. Ask for evidence when a program makes those promises.
